Gwen Stefani, SECC, Glasgow
Gwen was embracing all things Scottish last night - from blood pudding to a new Scotland strip, which she was proudly sporting by the end of the evening.
Saying goodbye to her wee Scottish personal trainer of 12 years, who was leaving the tour after this performance, actually did seem to have the platinum-haired songstress all shook up.
Opening with tour title-track, The Sweet Escape, the audience swiftly entered comic book territory, as Ms Stefani came on stage trapped in a sparkly gold prison in her glittery convict playsuit.
advertisementThe eight dancers, who had bravely made their way through the SECC crowd, soon got in on the act too adorning capes and masks for If I Were A Rich Girl as fake money fell from the sky. Her two solo albums have indeed made Stefani a very rich girl, a fact for which she thanked the throngs of Scottish fans before she asked which member of the audience was going to inspire her.
Costume change number two saw her reappear in a stunning pink geisha mini-dress before she went full-throttle into a cracking version of Playback as her gangsters and fellow geishas cavorted behind her.
And for Wind It Up (her infamous yodelling song, sampling The Sound of Music, which you either love or hate) a dog-tooth coat was the order of the day before it was thrown aside to reveal some seriously short red hotpants to go with her brick-red lips.
Hollaback Girl seemed to be the total crowd-pleaser until Gwen decided to get in among the crowd herself, which was a truly nice touch, and actually one of her vocal highlights of the evening.
She admitted that the Glasgow crowd was "deliciously cute up close" and with her Orange County pedigree that was a compliment indeed.
Dedicating the No Doubt encore to her son Kingston (a quarter Scottish, don't you know) which she sang beautifully with a soulful female band member, there was really only one thing left for her to do, as What You Waiting For truly brought the house down. Hope you make a sweet return soon, Gwen.
